Soil Sleuths Class Series-Part 1

Take a closer look at the foundation growing your food, flowers or pasture! OSU Assistant Professor of Practice in General Agriculture, Nan Xu, will lead us through a hands-on demonstration on how to use a soil probe to collect a soil sample, and discuss how to determine the best timing, depth, and locations for collecting representative samples. Nan will also lead a hands-on texture analysis and talk about the soil test kits—such as N-P-K strips and moisture meters. These can be engaging tools for home gardeners, however, we’ll discuss what they can and can’t reliably tell us. A list of regional soil testing labs will be provided with guidance on choosing the right lab and analysis package based on the participant’s needs. This is part one of a four-part series. Oregon Food Bank has provided Local Food Procurement Assistance funding that allows JCFC to purchase fresh, nutritious foods from local, underserved growers and then donate it to the Josephine County Food Bank. This funding will END October 1st due to Executive Administration cuts.

As a community partner working collaboratively to feed Josephine County, we encourage you to attend the Shine Your Light on Hunger Fundraiser this month!
